The United Democratic Movement (UDM) was formed by a prominent former National Party leader, Roelf Meyer (who has since resigned from the UDM); former African National Congress and homeland leader, Bantu Holomisa; and John Taylor, former ANC REC member in 1997. From Markinor polls it has been established that the profile of UDM supporters corresponds directly with the demographic composition of South Africa.

Bantu Holomisa
Major General (retired) H Bantubonke (Bantu) Holomisa co-founded the United Democratic Movement (UDM) in 1997 and currently serves as its president. In 1999, within a period of twenty months since the UDM was established in 1997, he and thirteen other members of the party were elected to Parliament. Previously, he was the commander of the Transkei Defence Force and head of the Transkei government (former independent homeland between 1987 and 1994) up to the first democratic national elections in South Africa in 1994.
Between 1988 and 1989, the government led by Holomisa un-banned approximately 33 organisations that were banned by his predecessors, and his government worked closely with the liberation movements. As a result, Transkei had a smooth transition prior to the 1994 elections. Holomisa also led the Transkei delegation to Convention for a Democratic South Africa (Codesa) negotiations.
He was chosen by the ANC election committee to campaign nationwide alongside Nelson Mandela, Thabo Mbeki, Cyril Ramaphosa, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, the late Joe Slovo and Steve Tshwete during the democratic election in 1994.
He served as the deputy minister of Environment and Tourism of South Africa in the government of national unity, which was elected in 1994.
In 1996, he was expelled from the ANC after testifying to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission about activities in the Transkei. He refused to retract his testimony, arguing that what he had said was of historical knowledge to all concerned.
Holomisa is an able athlete, who has played rugby, soccer, tennis, and golf and was vice-captain of the Parliamentary Rugby Squad from 1994-1996. He is married with two children
